In looking at the above NAS RDA for protein intake, one can see that the recommended daily protein intake decreases as you age. The evidence and logic in support of decreasing one’s daily protein intake as you age is questionable. Nevertheless, the current belief is that you require less daily protein intake as you age.
Let’s examine this argument: Nutrition is one factor that determines your health. The other factor contributing to your health is genetics. Genetic inheritance or susceptibility you cannot change. For instance, you cannot change your hair or skin color. However, compared to nutrition, genetics has more of a secondary role in your overall health than you realize. After you are born, nutrition, and environmental factors, determine what genetic feature is expressed. You can think of genetics as the blueprint. Yet, nutrition is the main factor that affects how the blueprint is played out.
The fate of over consuming proteins is similar to carbohydrates. Protein consumed in excessive amounts will not be stored as protein. The excess will be stored as fats but ONLY after your body uses the needed amino acids. You therefore do not have any stored forms of protein in your body, except possibly your muscles. Every amino acid within a protein that you consume and possess is serving a purpose within your body. Examples of protein currently performing vital functions in your body are enzymes, muscles, and connective tissues found in your body.
The tissues beneath the surface of your skin are connective tissues and are made of protein. These connective tissues are what keep you looking young. As you “age,” the elasticity of your skin is lost. The reason this happens is that your skin has lost the supportive structure provided by the connective tissues beneath your skin. The reason given why you lose the supportive structure provided by your connective tissues, as you get older, is that of aging. However, a better explanation as to why you are losing the supportive connective tissues’ structure is due to a protein and subcutaneous fat deficiency exacerbated over your lifetime. Protein deficiencies happen daily and over time result in the loss of elasticity of your skin from the loss of connective tissues. Recognizing the possibility that protein malnutrition presents as skin wrinkles will help you realize that protein deficiency could cause your health to deteriorate in other ways.
Dietary proteins consumed are broken down in your small intestine by enzymes called peptidase into individual amino acids. The likelihood that the needed quantities of the individual or essential amino acids are available depends on the food source eaten. Once the amino acids are absorbed into your bloodstream, it is used for the synthesis of needed structural proteins, enzymes or even as a backup source of fuel. Any free amino acids in your bloodstream will be used and is not “stored” as free amino acids. Every amino acid in your bloodstream will eventually be used. Certain amino acids are able to undergo gluconeogenesis to glucose when the glucose level becomes low, such as a high metabolic state.
